Last Sunday I visited my aunt's house to see pieces of a blanket yet still unmade. My Grandma on my Mom's side died over 20 years ago. She made my cousin and I similar things. We both have the exact same doll with a pink dress made out of safety pins and small beads. She also gave us flower children pictures she painted. At the time my friends asked if they were Charmkins. No. Today they would be like the photos of babies dressed as flowers. My cousin receive one yellow flower child picture from Grandma. I received red flower child and blue flower child pictures for my wall. They still are on my walls in my apartment. To me they are sacred because Grandma made them for me.
When my Grandpa died on my Mom side 12 years ago, we discovered in the house unmade quilts Grandma started. The 40+ flower child pictures were painted completely for our quilts. My quilt was pieced together and just needed to be finished. My cousin's quilt was still in pieces with fabric cut to border around the pictures. 12 years later it is still untouched. My sister examined the pictures looking for stains. Only one had a rust or bug stain. That could be made into a pillow. My sister said she would find time this summer to sew together the 19 flower children into a quilt. My sister suggested buying fabric soon because Grandma matched things too much and she will piece the quilt together not as Grandma would have, but how my sister thinks it should look. I'm glad my quilt was mostly put together so I know what Grandma intended it to appear. The bottom square says To me From Grandma. I have had my finished quilt since I finished college 5 years. When I cam home from college and saw it on my bed, I asked where this came from. I never knew before my dead Grandma made a quilt for me. I had a quilt from my other Grandma for years who died last Christmas. A family secret revealed. Post later. Bye!
