I turn on my computer earlier today and there is a story on the Des Moines flood. You can relax, it was downtown. The storm sewers spewed out water all over Court Ave via the manholes. The prisoners in the holding cells came out to sandbag the courthouse cause the basement got flooded. The city crews pumped out the water. But that didn't relieve the Racoon River flooding every bridge in the area. Bars, hotels, and bridges were sandbagged and closed until further notice. Science Center, YMCA, and schools were closed today and tomorrow. Baseball stadium is sandbagged and so far dry. Apartment dwellers were stuck in their homes. The American Red Cross opened a few shelters. Also a nearby lake flooded and reservoir to the north released a controlled flood. Good thing I did laundry yesterday cause today going across town is a little difficult.
Cats didn't like the wind from this morning's shower so we spent it mostly in the stairwell. They have been napping ever since. Frodo took a nap on my foot. So far electricity and water is still going and there have been reports of prank calls announcing the power will be shut off. The news stated any power shut offs will be announced by the media, not phone calls. I can say much of downtown has no power in the flooded areas. I am doing fine. If necessary I can move into my parents' house. My sister's house forces me to cross the flooded river so it would be difficult to get to work in a timely manner.
I can hear the conversations with customers with reservations at downtown hotels when I go to work tomorrow.
"We have reservations, what do you mean I can't stay there cause it's flooded?"
"I mean the only way you can get there is to steal a boat and paddle to it, but it will be locked up, wet, and dark from no electricity, and that is if the National Guard doesn't remove you from the premises when they find you."
Or even better "I mean you will have to drive through road barriers and swim across bridges to get to your hotel, and trust me when I say the police and National Guard will get in your way and escort back to dry land cause they have no desire to rescue you."
Well, nothing else to report. Post later.
