Living in the past

Today at my volunteer position at the local living history museum, the
intern and another volunteer spoke to a few visitors about the reality
shows showing people living in the past. The intern said she liked the
Edwardian house in Britain and the World War II house. She said she
hated listening to the nonstop griping on these shows. It made her
wonder why they volunteered in the first place. I viewed the Edwardian
house and did wonder why some of these people were there. I liked the
part where they brought in a former Edwardian maid who worked in the
house they were in. Those modern people were quickly humbled into
realizing how lucky they are today since sexual harrassment and sexual
abuse are no longer part of women's jobs.

One would not catch a reenactor or interpreter at a museum in those
reality shows. We know how hard it was and enjoy returning to the 21st
Century at the end of the day. Besides that, the networks would not
choose someone familiar with living in the past because they would cope
with their surroundings better and have lack of culture shock reality
shows require to create drama.

My nieces would make good candiates for living in the past. They don't
enjoy visiting my parents' house from lack of cable, internet, and
microwave popcorn. Though, their father is a history teacher so they
have visited historic spots. One year they followed the Oregon Trail in
their car. Another year they visited French and Indian War sites.
Culture shock might not be as bad for them, they would know what to
expect. Post later. Bye!
